There are thousands of seniors in Cook County who are not receiving their senior or homeowner exemption because they did not apply for it. In the past, seniors did not have to reapply for the exemption every year but a new state law now requires a senior to reapply for the exemption annually.
Seniors who did not apply will receive a $0 credit for the Homeowner and Senior Citizen Exemption.
Please check your bill. If you are over age 65 as of December 31, 2010, and do not see the exemption on your tax bill, do one of the following right now:
1) Pay the incorrect bill and apply for a “Certificate of Error.” Homeowners will receive a refund within 100 days.
2) File your exemption application at the Cook County Assessor’s office at 118 N. Clark Street, 3rd Floor. Please bring your tax bill and a photo ID.
Someone else can file on your behalf, but will need the following identification: copy of the incorrect tax bill, copy of a photo ID and completed Senior Citizen Homeowner Exemption Form. To download the forms, click here.
