2640-2720 N Sheffield – Edith Spurlock Apartments Redevelopment

*Renovation and Construction Update March 2021*

My office and the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) team hosted a virtual meeting to provide information about the renovation plan for their building located at 2640-2720 N. Sheffield Avenue, Edith Spurlock Sampson Apartments. The CHA team provided an overview of the project and answered questions from the audience. My office took notes and recorded your comments.

The project to renovate the existing buildings and erect a new structure that will be linked to the two senior apartment towers received approvals from the City in 2019. The purpose of this meeting was to inform the community about the expected timeline, possible construction phase impacts on immediate neighbors and the operations of the building once the work is complete.

Thank you to all who joined us on March 31 for the virtual community meeting. Please review the presentation given by CHA here.

*Proposal and Development Update August 2019*

The project that will be supported by CHA funds will bring renovated apartments, new community spaces, and new amenities for current and future residents. Besides the redevelopment of the two existing structures into a total of 405 units of senior housing, the plan calls for the construction of a new building that will be linked to the two senior apartment towers. The proposed new structure would be six-stories tall and contain 80 units that will provide affordable as well as market-rate apartments for families in Lincoln Park. The site is currently a Planned Development (PD 52), and in order to allow for its redevelopment, a zoning map amendment must be approved for the PD.
