    Attend your CAPS meeting

CAPS (Chicago Alternative Police Strategy) is a partnership between police, community leaders, business owners, and local residents and is the foundation of the City’s community policing philosophy. We strongly encourage you to attend your CAPS meetings. CAPS meetings allow you to get to know the police officers who patrol your Beat and give you the opportunity to relay your concerns directly to them.

    Become a Court Advocate

Court advocacy is a way to show support for victims and solidarity against crime in your community.  Volunteers can attend court hearings with crime victims or witnesses and provide the presence of concerned community members.  To learn more about the Court Advocacy Program click here.

    Start a Block Club

One of the most important methods of preventing crime is for neighbors to work together.  Active neighbors can be a strong deterrent to crime and can work together effectively to report crime and catch those breaking the law.  For more information regarding starting a Block Club click here.

    Report a Crime

Sometimes, neighbors are hesitant to report problems.  Regardless of whether you believe that others might have reported the crime already, you do not believe that it is a major issue, or you’re concerned about police not responding immediately, always report any crime.  When you call 911, dispatchers prioritize calls based on urgency. Even if a patrol does not arrive on the scene immediately, a log is kept, and the Police Department is notified of your call.  Call 911 to report a crime in progress and 311 after the fact.  Click here to find out how you can also report crime via text message.  You should notify our office of criminal activity as well, but in an emergency, your first call should always be 911.

    Safety Tips & Police Information

We’re committed to doing everything we can to make the 43rd Ward a great place to live, but there are some precautions that residents should take to stay safe:

    • Remember to lock your house, garage, and car doors, and close accessible windows when you are not home.

    • Install a good deadbolt on your garage door or your back porch.

    • Be aware of your surroundings when walking, especially at night.

    • Report suspicious behavior – always call 911 if you feel uncomfortable.

    • Beware of door-to-door “salesmen” or “utility workers” trying to get access to your house or yard without proper ID.

    • Put house numbers on your garage.
