Building Permits
The City of Chicago Department of Buildings requires building permits for any new construction, major repairs or renovations, demolition and/or work seen from the street on Landmark buildings. Section 13-32-020 of the Chicago Municipal sets forth the situations in which a building permit is required so please refer to the City’s Municipal Code before beginning any project as you, as property owner, will be responsible for following the proper permitting procedure.
Except in very limited circumstances, including private garages, fences, sheds, corrections of building code violations or emergency situations, the City requires a ten day hold period prior to the issuance of a building permit. Our office can assist in waiving this ten day hold period if you, your contractor or architect provides a copy of the proposed construction plans, a copy of the building permit application and a copy of the aldermanic acknowledgement letter you would like executed. Please allow two to three business days for turnaround of the Alderman’s signature. Building permit applications are available on the City of Chicago’s website or at City Hall (121 North LaSalle Street, Room 900) between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Please feel free to contact our office at 773.348-9500 or the Department of Buildings customer service desk at 312-744-3449 with any questions or concerns you have regarding construction projects and the permit process.
